Fashion design is the art applied to the designing of clothes and lifestyle accessories. This has been influenced by cultural and social attitudes that have evolved with time and place.

To start a career as a fashion designer, two types of qualifications are needed which is, natural and acquired. A natural skill set would require a decent aesthetic sense, colour expertise, good taste and sense of trends and fashion. Students usually take a full-time course or a part time certificate course after their 10+2 level. There are several short-term certificate courses that are offered by the same fashion institutes for super specialization, on part-time basis. These courses equip a person with technical and creative thinking skills. While the academic requirements are not very high, a person needs considerable aptitude and talent to be labelled “designer” material. Further, the person must be creative enough to combine colours, shades and textures and express their ideas through sketches. They must also be able to visualise new design, patters, garments and accessories and enjoy working with Fabrics and Accessories.

As a professional fashion designer, a person can work in areas like designer wear production, fashion marketing, planning and concept management.
